Early Life & Education: A Foundation in Technology

Born on May 31, 1964, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Rajeev Chandrasekhar's disciplined upbringing was shaped by his father, Air Commodore M. K. Chandrasekhar, and his mother, Valli Chandrasekhar. After schooling at St. Paul’s Convent School, Thrissur, and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bengaluru, he pursued Electrical Engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology.  

In 1988, Rajeev earned a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and began his career at Intel Corporation. There, he joined the elite architectural team that developed the revolutionary i486 processor—setting new standards for computing power.  

Transforming Indian Telecom: From Intel to BPL

Returning to India in 1991, Rajeev joined the BPL Group and identified the immense potential of mobile communication. In 1994, he founded BPL Mobile, one of India’s first telecom service providers. Under his leadership, BPL Mobile democratized mobile connectivity during a time when telephones were a luxury.  

By 2005, Rajeev’s strategic vision culminated in the sale of his stake in BPL Communications to the Essar Group for $1.1 billion, marking a milestone in India’s telecom history. Subsequently, he ventured into investment, founding Jupiter Capital, which focused on high-growth sectors like technology, defense, and media.  

A Visionary in Politics: Paving India’s Digital Path

In 2006, Rajeev Chandrasekhar transitioned into politics, becoming an Independent Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for Karnataka. His focus was clear: shaping India’s technological and economic progress.

- Digital India & Internet Governance: Pioneering policies for a robust digital ecosystem.  
- Cybersecurity & Data Protection: Advocating for stronger safeguards for India’s cyber assets.

Appointed as Minister of State for Electronics and IT in 2021, Rajeev played a pivotal role in shaping India’s tech policies:  

1. Semiconductor Manufacturing: Leading initiatives to position India as a semiconductor hub and reduce import dependence.  
2. PLI Schemes: Boosting domestic production of electronics and IT through production-linked incentives.  
3. Cybersecurity: Advocating for cutting-edge data protection frameworks to ensure cyber resilience.  
4. 5G Deployment: Fast-tracking 5G rollout to keep India at the forefront of global connectivity.  
5. AI and Startups: Promoting deep-tech startups and AI-driven innovation.  

2024 Elections & New Challenges

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rajeev contested from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram constituency, facing a tough battle against Shashi Tharoor. Though he narrowly lost, this opened the door to a transformative role as the President of BJP Kerala in 2025.  

Rajeev’s focus now lies in strengthening BJP’s foothold in Kerala, blending technology-driven governance and grassroots-level engagement.
